The Life of Maria Montessori--in a nutshell

At the end of February, room 3 celebrated Montessori Education Week by studying the time line of Maria Montessori's life.  Here are some of the highlights:

August 31, 1870: Maria Montessori was born in Chiaravalle, Italy.

1875: The Montessori family moves to Rome and she starts school.

1882: Maria continues her schooling at a Technical School for boys against her father's wishes.

1896: Against all odds she graduates from medical school, becoming Italy's first woman doctor.  She begins to work with special needs children and developes her observational skills.

January 6, 1907: She opens the doors of the first Casa dei Bambini (Children's House) in a poor neighborhood of Rome.  For more than 45 years Dr. Montessori travels the world teaching children and training teachers to help children reach their potential.

May 6, 1952: Mari Montessori dies at the age of 83 in Amsterdam.

Montessori Education Week

In celebration of Montessori Education Week 2012, the teachers were challenged with finding a way to talk about "What Montessori is?", "Why we are called a Montessori School?", "Who was Maria Montessori?", etc.

Mrs. Shelley, opted for creating a book with the children, entitled The Important Book
The book the children are writing is modeled on The Important Book by Margret Wise Brown.
